Episode 8 Game 1 Nikolai: Well, as tempted as I am to roll again, I need to have something in case it comes down to catch-up, so I'll bank.
(a few groans from the crowd)
Doug: Nikolai, it's your decision -- not their decision. With that.
Doug: Indeed we're getting close to the end. Round 5 starts with this.
Were carbonated drinks around before or after the U.S. Civil War?
Doug: Nikolai.
Nikolai: Before.
Doug: They were around before the Civil War. That's right. (audience applause) Take the free roll, please, Nikolai.
(scattered cheers)
Doug: Woah! Big one. Eleven for CY$1100. If you banked now, you'd double your score and would be CY$300 shy of the lead. Of course, you could roll again and possibly take the lead.
(audience shouts suggestions)
Nikolai: I feel like I need to get into the lead, so I'll roll again and hope for a double.
Doug: Woah! No double on the dice -- but you've virtually doubled the pot to CY$2100. Is that enough -- or want to keep on keepin' on?
Nikolai: Any lead is a good lead. So I'll bank the money I've got.
Doug: Banking 2100 big ones.
Doug: All right, we're starting Round 6. Unless Kourtney banks exactly CY$700 in this round, a catch-up round will follow this. For now -- this question.
Psalms, Ecclesiastes or Numbers. The Byrds' song "Turn! Turn! Turn!" adapted most of its lyrics from which book of The Bible?
Doug: Kourtney.
Kourtney: Psalms is the name of the book.
Doug: Oh no, it's actually Ecclesiastes. So that means the dice are hot again for Nikolai.
Doug: And that's the only time you want to roll a 7 for the rest of the game. That was a free roll to start the round -- so we seed a new pot with CY$700.
Nikolai, you can roll the dice as much as you like -- or until you bust. Just keep in mind regardless of how much distance you put between yourself and your opponent, Kourtney will always have at least one way to catch up in the catch-up round.
With that said, bank the 700 or roll again?
Nikolai: Let's give it one roll for sure.
(scattered cheers)
Doug: And you roughly double the pot again. Bank 1500 or risk and roll the bones again?
(audience shouts suggestions)
Nikolai: Call me overly cautious, but I'll bank.
Doug: All right, Overly. (a few laughs from the crowd) CY$1500 more in your coffers.
Doug: And now -- it's catch-up time. Kourtney, you get one roll of the dice. It's not a free roll. But we immediately add the value of the roll to your bank.
Because this is not a free roll, rolling a 7 is a bust. You don't lose anything and you don't gain anything either. But it also means the double decision board is active. And you've probably figured you'll need a double just to stay in business.
So to help you, let's shuffle the board.
Doug: "Lose loss" is up there for you -- which, in effect, serves as a golden ticket to the next game. We also have an extra roll attached to at least one of the amounts on the board. There's also a space that doubles your score.
And as I recall, we've only had one double in this game -- and that was on a free roll. Maybe a double's waiting for you here. You won't know until you roll the bones.
Doug: It's 11 for CY$1100. Nice payoff but it's not enough. Nikolai's rolling for a million.
Doug: Nikolai, I'll be back to you in just a moment. Kourtney, you ran into a good bit of tough luck in this game. Unfortunately, this is your second loss -- but we're sending you out the door with a rather nice piece of change. CY$3600 plus your prior winnings for a grand total of...
Doug: ...CY$26,450. (audience cheers) Well done, Kourtney and thanks for playing.
Nikolai, we've already crunched the numbers for you. You've banked a grand total of CY$66,650. (more cheers) And when we come back, one shot at CY$1,000,000.
We're playing the Mega Roll on Hot Dice -- after this! Call your neighbors, call your friends, even call your frenemies! (audience laughs) Give 'em a buzz -- and come right back.
