Episode 10 Game 1

Jan Murray, Anne Murray or Ann Curry. Who started a professional career in the state of Oregon?

(Michael buzzes in)

Michael: Ann Curry

Doug: Her broadcast journalism career started at KTVL in Medford, Oregon. (audience applause) Dice are hot for you, Michael.

(Michael rolls)

(a few groans from the crowd)

Doug: And -- joy. A 4 for CY$400. Well, I have to ask, Michael. Bank 400 or roll again?

(audience shouts suggestions)

Michael: I will roll again.

(Michael rolls)

Doug: Hey now -- double 4. Double decision time. Would you like for us to add CY$800 to the pot...

...or take whatever's hiding in the double 4 screen on the board?

Michael: I'm going to the board and hope that it's CY$3000 behind there.

(scattered cheers)

Doug: If three large is there, this could be a really close game. What's in the double 4?

(ding) (a few cheer)

Doug: Yeah -- it's double pot -- but not worth writing home about -- at least -- not now. The CY$400 pot doubles to...

Doug: ...an CY$800 pot. Let's shuffle the board again.

(amounts are shuffled on the double decision board; after shuffling stops, the amounts are covered immediately with the doubles)

Doug: If I were playing, I would've gone for the board in the hopes of find CY$3000. But -- we have CY$800 in the pot. Bank the bills or roll the bones?

(audience shouts suggestions)

Michael: Roll the bones.

(Michael rolls)

(scattered cheers)

Doug: And a great roll -- 10 for CY$1000 more. Pot's up to 1800. Is that enough -- or do you think you can avoid the bust again?

(audience shouts suggestions)

Michael: I'm rolling one more time.

(Michael rolls)

(more cheers)

Doug: And *close* to a bust -- but an 8 for CY$800 more. Pot's up to 2600. Was that *really* one more?

Michael: I gotta get some money on the board, so yes, that was really one more. I'll bank.

(audience applause)

Doug: Seeding your bank with two large and six bills.

(ding)

Doug: Closer game now -- Nikolai leads by CY$700. We're nearing the end of the game as we start Round 5 with three familiar choices.

Jan Murray, Anne Murray or Ann Curry. Who left "The Today Show" in 2012?

(Michael buzzes in)

Doug: Michael.

Michael: Ann Curry.

Doug: And the less said about the circumstances surrounding that departure, the better. You're right. (audience applause)

(Michael rolls)

Doug: Michael takes his free roll -- and it's a 5 for CY$500. You may bank half a grand -- or roll the dice again.

Michael: I'll roll the dice again.

(Michael rolls)

Doug: Darn -- a 7. Sorry about that. Well -- we're at Round 6. Unless Michael wins this question *and* banks exactly CY$700, the catch-up round will follow. Important question coming up.

Jan Murray, Anne Murray or Ann Curry. Who worked as a physical education teacher?

(Nikolai buzzes in)

Doug: Nikolai.

Nikolai: Anne Murray.

Doug: She sure did. (audience applause) Dice are hot for your free roll.

(Nikolai rolls)

Doug: And it's a 4 for CY$400. Nikolai, as you know, regardless of how much moolah you bank, there will always be at least one way for Michael to catch up to you in the catch-up round. So with that disclosed, bank now or risk?

(audience shouts suggestions)

Nikolai: I'll take a big ri-, uh, I mean, I'll roll them.

(scattered laughter from the crowd)

(Nikolai rolls)

Doug: Oh -- and another 7. That's a bust. Sorry.

Doug: Well -- it's catch-up time. Michael, you'll get one roll of the dice. If necessary, Nikolai will roll the dice once.

In the catch-up round, we don't build a pot. The value of the roll is immediately added to your bank. However, there are no free rolls in the catch-up round and a 7 is still a bust. You don't lose anything if you roll a 7 -- but you don't gain anything either.

Because there are no free rolls, the double decision board is still active. And speaking of the double decision board...

(amounts are shuffled on the double decision board; after shuffling stops, the amounts are covered immediately with the doubles)

Doug: ...we've shuffled in some elements exclusive to this round. At least one screen hides cyber-money *plus* an extra roll of the dice. Another will double everything in your bank. There are no busts up there -- but there are amounts worth less than CY$200.

So -- Michael -- just so we're on the same the page, you're looking for a roll higher than a 7 -- or a double. Anything else -- and Nikolai has won another game.

(Michael rolls)

(audience groans)

Doug: A 5 for 500. Sorry. Nikolai wins another game.

(dings; audience applause)

Doug: Well -- Nikolai -- another CY$3300 for your coffers. We add your take in this game to your previous winnings. Your grand total is CY$99,100.

(audience cheers)

Doug: And as long as you don't bust in the upcoming Bonus Bonanza, you'll crack the 100-grand barrier. Good luck there.

Michael, you played well. You just needed some better luck at the double decision board. This is just the first loss against you. You're not out until you lose two. We'll see you a little later on in the show for the next game.

After the break, we'll see Nikolai at a familiar place -- the Prudential at the -- uh -- Bonus Bonanza. (audience laughs) Stay with us.
