Episode 9 Game 1

Joseph: Sounds good to me, I'll bank.

(more cheers)

Doug: Banking 2600.

(ding)

Doug: Lead changes hands as we near the end of the game. This is Round 5. We have Round 6 and a catch-up round to go. For now, this question to start Round 5.

Clark Gable, Humphrey Bogart or Cary Grant. The American Film Institute notes which actor is the top male movie star of all time?

(Joseph buzzes in)

Doug: Joseph.

Joseph: Humphrey Bogart.

Doug: Bogey's right. (audience applause) Dice are hot again for you. Roll 'em.

(Joseph rolls)

(scattered cheers)

Doug: And another great free roll. Big 10 for CY$1000. Bank the grand or take the dice again in hand?

(audience shouts suggestions)

Joseph: Roll 'em again. Come on, puppy paws!

(Joseph rolls)

Doug: Oooh -- far from dog feet. A 7.

Well, we're already at Round 6. Unless Nikolai banks exactly CY$1200 in this round, the catch-up round follows. Crucial question -- here it comes.

She's an author, she's an actress or she's a singer. Which statement best describes Amy Tan?

(Joseph rolls)

Doug: Joseph.

Joseph: She's an author, Doug.

Doug: She *is* an author, Joseph. (audience applause) Take your free roll, please.

(Joseph rolls)

Doug: You start off with a 600. Now, Joseph, no matter how much distance you put between yourself and Nikolai, there will always be at least one way for him to catch up in the next round.

(audience shouts suggestions)

Joseph: I may as well go for it, Doug. Come on, doubles!

(Joseph rolls)

(scattered cheers)

Doug: Wow -- another non-double 10. Pot's up to CY$1600. Bank or keep rolling?

(audience shouts suggestions)

(time passes) (buzz buzz)

Doug: Oh -- dear. No decision in time. And unfortunately that means...

Doug: ...that's an automatic bust. Sorry -- but it's in the rules.

Doug: Well -- on that note -- Nikolai's down CY$1200 as we go into the catch-up round. Nikolai, since you're trailing, you'll start. You get one roll of the dice and one roll only. If necessary, Joseph will roll the dice once.

In the catch-up round, there's no free roll and no pot to build. The value of the roll is immediately added to your bank.

There's also the matter of a double decision board -- which we never visited in the earlier rounds. But still we have to shuffle it.

(amounts are shuffled on the double decision board; after shuffling stops, the amounts are covered immediately with the doubles)

Doug: On the board, one screen will double your score, another gives you cyber-money and an extra roll.

Remember, if you roll a 7, that's a bust. You won't lose anything -- but you won't gain anything either.

Nikolai, simply put, you need a double to stay in business. If you roll box cars, you'll have the choice of banking CY$1200 and letting Joseph break the tie with his roll -- or go to the double 6 screen on the board. Any other double -- and we automatically default to the board. Anything else -- and Joseph's our winner.

(Nikolai rolls)

(audience groans)

Doug: A 4 -- not enough. Joseph wins it.

(dings; audience applause)

Doug: A few things to tie up before we let Joseph play the Bonus Bonanza. You may recall a few episodes ago, Nikolai lost a game -- but we made a scoring mistake during the game. That might have had an effect on the outcome and we didn't charge him with a loss.

In *this* game, I should disclose we threw out the toss-up question in Round 2, due to an error therein, and replaced it with a new one. Since no one got control of the dice on the errant question, that didn't affect the outcome.

Doug: So, I'm afraid this loss will count against you, Nikolai, I'm sorry to say. But, the good news is you do pocket another CY$1800. Even better -- you crack the CY$80,000 mark. (audience cheers) CY$80,050 to be exact. And you still get to play another game.

Joseph, CY$2600 in this game plus your earlier winnings give you CY$5900. When we come back, Joseph goes for CY$50,000 and maybe more in the Bonus Bonanza -- after this.
